Want to do something different during your trip to Hong Kong and feed your tummy at the same time? Try taking cooking classes in Hong Kong! Here are 3 places where locals learn to make new dishes.

- Summary -

1. Towngas cooking centre

  • Any Chinese dish you can name

  • ~$USD60

2. Kee Wah Studio

  • Traditional Chinese pastry

  • ~USD$35

3. ABC Studio

  • Japanese dishes and pastry

  • ~USD$35

- Towngas Cooking Studio -

This is a very popular choice among locals. I have been there a few times with my mom. You can learn almost every Chinese dish you can name: Dim sum, roast duck, abalone, egg tart (I'm hungry just typing this line). They also offer cooking class of Western dishes.

Their cooking centre is conveniently located in the centre of Causeway Bay. You will need a reservation to attend any class. Do register in advance because their classes often run out of places very quickly.

Pro tip - Register "Practice" class instead of "Demonstration" class so that you can actually cook the food hands on!

Each class cost around USD$60 and lasts 2-3 hours. It is a bit pricey if you are tight on budget. But it is definitely cheaper than the Tripadvisor ones that only serve tourists!

- Kee Wah Studio-

Kee Wah is an established bakery that is famous for their traditional "Wife cake" (sweet winter melon pastry) and cookies. Their new cooking school was launched in October 2017. They offer classes of sweet winter melon pastry, egg tart, walnut cookies and other Chinese pastry. I still haven't been able to take a class there yet because of their super busy schedule. But I definitely want to try some day!

Their cooking studio is in a beautiful 1930s historical building in Wan Chai. You will need a reservation to attend any class. Luckily most of the classes are offered on weekdays so if you are on a trip, you can choose to avoid the weekend crowd.

Each class costs around USD$35 and lasts for 2 hours.

- ABC Studio -

It is a chained cooking class studio that came from Japan. They have opened cooking school in various countries in Asia including Malaysia, Korea, Thailand and more. They offer daily cooking class of traditional Japanese cuisine and contemporary Japanese fusion desserts.

Their three cooking studios are in Tsim Sha Tsui (K11 Shopping Centre), Central (PMQ) and Tai Koo (Cityplaza). You can choose one that is closer to you. You will need a reservation to attend the class. Unfortunately, they do not offer online reservation. You will have to give them a call when you arrive Hong Kong.

The studio operates on a membership basis where you will need to purchase a package of 12 cooking classes. However, as a tourist, you can take their one-off trial class. The trial costs around USD$35.
