What can a tourist do in Hong Kong to truly experience the local life? We have picked 5 things to do for you with some recommended places.

Markets
Yes we have westernized supermarkets but we love to go to traditional wet markets once in a while for extra fresh food and super good deals.

Some people think it is filthy and smelly. You will see fresh raw meat hanging on racks and fish swimming in tanks. But go to enjoy the hustle and bustle and watch locals bargain with shopkeepers to experience the local lifestyle. Visit the century-old Graham Street Market in Central and the Wan Chai Market.

Pro-tip: Don't miss the cooked food centres usually situated above wet markets. The best local food are often well hidden there. The Taipo Market offers amazing pork noodles and the Fa Yuen Street Market has great local coffee shops.

If you are thinking about the markets for clothes and cheap goods, here are two that locals go. I'm not talking about the Temple Street market that tourists love to go. The REAL local markets. Get phone accessories at the lowest price in Ap Liu Street in Sham Shui Po and cheap clothes in Jardine's Crescent in Causeway Bay.

Hiking
Hong Kong was once rated the best city to live in thanks to the vast amount of country parks and conservation. What better to do than exploring the scenic hills and secret beaches in Hong Kong?
The High West will show you the best view of the Victoria Harbour. The locals go here instead of the Peak for the amazing scenary. The easy hike takes 2.5 hours. More info here.

Popular among tourists and locals, Dragon's Back is a medium level hike with a rewarding view. You can oversee the beautiful ocean on the top. It takes around 3 hours and a bit more if you decide to walk down to the beach. More info here.

Long Ke Wan in Sai Kung is where the locals go for a hidden beach. The difficulty is medium and it takes around 5 hours. More info here.

If you have an extra day here and you are lucky enough that the weather is good (summer is not a good time due to the rain and heat, oops), challenge yourself with a hike here!
Pro tip: Do enough research before your hike and never underestimate the risk in certain hiking paths with beautiful views. Two tourist died hiking the Suicide Cliff last year.

Dessert
We people of Hong Kong don't sleep early at night. Locals love to hangout with friends after dinner at dessert places. They open until very late usually.
The line outside Cong Sao Star Dessert is always long. You can get all sort of local dessert here: Mango coconut pudding, Longan shaved ice, Durian bubble ice. They have several chain stores in Hong Kong.

And you can't miss the giant bowl fruit and herbal jelly of B Jai (official name Kei Kee Dessert). Share it with friends or finish the monster all by yourself if you are really hungry. They also offer delicious spicy garlic chicken wings.
