Budget Michelin Food Guide in Hong Kong

There are a LOT of Michelin restaurants in Hong Kong. Luckily quite some of them are affordable. Don't expect to see 3-star restaurants in this list but you can be sure they taste amazing. I have hand-picked 6 that I have tried and loved before they even made it to the list.

Summary of the restaurants:

- Noodles -

1. Tsim Chai Kee Noodle 沾仔記

2. Ho To Tai Noodle Shop 好到底麵家

- Snack -

3. Fat Boy 第三代肥仔小食店

4. Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong 公和荳品廠

- Something sweet -

5. Kwan Kee Store 坤記糕品專家

6. Mammy Pancake 媽咪雞蛋仔

1. Tsim Chai Kee Noodles

Located in the busy business district of Central, this is the favourite quick meal of many office workers nearby. Their best dish is Wonton noodles. The fresh shrimp wonton (dumplings) and perfectly cooked noodles cost only US$4 per bowl!

My funny personal story here: I was waiting to cross the road in a busy street in Central. Right before the light turned green, two Japanese guys asked me where they could find "ramen". My first thought was Ichiran (a famous Japanese ramen shop).

Then I realized they were looking for the Hong Kong style real "ramen". While they were climbing up the slopes on the way to Tsim Chai Kee, they showed me photos on their phones and told me they were TV hosts of the Japanese show Kawaii TV. That used to be my favourite show and I was thrilled I met them!

2. Ho To Tai Noodle Shop

If you ever visit Yuen Long in the New Territories to see the beautiful wetland, you can try this tasty noodle place. Their best dish is the shrimp roe dry noodles that costs USD$7. I live in Yuen Long and this is my go-to weekend lunch place.

Yes it's a simple dish with only three ingredients: shrimp roe, dry noodles and spring onion. You can taste the freshness of the shrimp from the dish. They still keep the vintage old Hong Kong vibe.

Don't forget to visit the bakery next door for the Lo Por Bang (translates as Wife cake - a sweet pastry)!

3. Fat Boy

This Tsim Sha Tsui snack shop serves very local snacks. So local it may not suit your appetite (but definitely worth a try if you want to #golocal). Currently operated by the third generation of the family, it sells super cheap cooked skewers with soy sauce. A set with 3 skewers costs US$3.

If you are not an adventurous foodie, try the giant octopus and red sausage. Real locals love the turkey kidney, pig ear, pig liver and pig intestines (YES we love to eat organs). Why not challenge yourself at this amazing snack shop?

The shop is always crowded with people during weekends. Don't worry, there are tonnes of other restaurants on this street if you decide not to try it after seeing it!

4. Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong

Opened in 1960, they have been serving freshly made tofu for almost 60 years. You can find tofu of many different flavors here: tofu in sweet soup ("tofu fa"), fried tofu with fish filling, marinated tofu with chili. The best thing is that they are CHEAP. Everything is around just US$1!

Unfortunately, thier original shop in Sham Shui Po had some liscensing issue and was forced to undergo massive renovation. Now only the old sign remains and everything else is new.

Do you know that we have a tour that visits the Kowloon City branch of this tofu shop? It still retains everything from the past and you can try the taste of old Hong Kong. >>Look at the tour >>

5. Kwan Kee Store

At this point you may realize numerous Michelin recommended local restaurants are in Sham Shui Po. This chinese cake shop is right next to the Sham Shui Po metro station. It sells all kinds of Hong Kong style cake/dessert at a low price. The red bean cake, the white sugar cake and the sesame cake are the favourites of many locals.

My favourite red bean cake ("boot jai go") is those in the above photo. The texture is a bit like mochi and it is made of red beans and brown sugar. If you are a sweet tooth like me, you will love this place!

6. Mammy Pancake

No they don't actually sell pancake. They sell delicious "egg waffle". They have 10+ shops around Hong Kong so it is pretty easy for you to find one close to you. Be prepared that there will be a queue and you will have to wait because all waffle is cooked-to-order.

They sell it in many different flavours: chocolate chip, green tea, sesami, pork and coffee. Sometimes they also offer seasonal choices like sweet potato and milk tea.

I started buying from them when they were still a little shop in Hung Hom. Getting freshly made hot egg waffle with melted chocolate chips inside in winter was one of my best college memories.

Useful info

Address: 1-5 Haven Street, Causeway Bay

Get there: 7 min walk from Causeway Bay MTR station
